Apple Bars...Smell The Cinnamon

These Apple Bars has a secret ingredient that will make it dark in colour yet moist and delicious, it is cocoa, I hope you will bake this bar many times for it is a favourite of the kids for breakfast, when they can grab-n-go.

Apple are suitable for many special diets. For those on sodium restricted diet, apples are very low in sodium. They are also low in calories. A medium size apple has only 70 calories. An apple provides bulk, aids in digestion and helps with  constipation problems.

This apple bar can be used for a healthy dessert, just add some crisp and firm apple slices with a scoop of Greek Yogurt.  For baking, choose firm apples that hold their shape well. Northern Spy, Idared, mutsu, Golden Delicious and Greening are excellent for baking.

To get the most food value from apples, eat them raw. Keep them in the crisper compartment of the refrigerator where it is cool and  humidity is the highest to maintain best quality.

Cocoa has more flavour than chocolate. It's distinctive aroma gives chocolate it's addictive flavour and makes a great  deep, fudgey apple-bar.

Cocoa powder is also rich in system-scrubbing antioxidants. It's good for you as long as you do not add too much fat or sugar. In this recipe you can adjust the sugar to your taste or diet, I love cinnamon so I always add more. You can whip up these apple bars in half an hour, from start to finish. Enjoy.


  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine

  • 1 1/4 cup sugar

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 tsp vanilla

  • 2 cups flour

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg

  • 2 tbsp cocoa

  • 2/3 cup milk

  • 2 cups shredded apples


    Cream butter and sugar and beat in eggs and vanilla.

    Stir dry ingredients and add to creamed mixture alternately with the milk. Stir in shredded apples. Spread in two greased 9-inch square pans and bake at 350 degrees until lightly browned ( about 30 minutes).

    Cool and cut in bars.
